1982–83 and 1983–84 seasons were a period of transition and ultimately ended in a Scottish League Cup victory. The 1982-83 season saw the club finish 4th in the Scottish Premier Division under manager John Greig, who resigned in October 1983. The 1983-84 season saw the appointment of Jock Wallace as manager and culminated in a 3-2 win against Celtic in the League Cup final, sealed by a hat-trick from Ally McCois
