Notes

Stoke City endured a difficult 1990–91 season in the Third Division, sacking manager Alan Ball in February and finishing a disappointing 14th place (then their lowest-ever league position). The club rebounded strongly in the 1991–92 campaign under new manager Lou Macari, finishing 4th in the league (narrowly missing out in the play-off semi-finals) and lifting the Football League Trophy with a Wembley victory over Stockport County.
