Notes

The 1995-96 campaign was a turbulent fight for survival for Athletic Bilbao, with Los Leones ultimately finishing a nervous 15th in La Liga, just four points clear of the relegation play-off zone. The challenging year was marked by managerial instability, with Dragoslav Stepanović replaced mid-season by caretaker José María Amorrortu after a run of poor results. Despite the struggles, the attack was anchored by the fan-favorite partnership of Cuco Ziganda and the iconic Julen Guerrero, who each netted 9 crucial league goals. The season, which also featured a young Aitor Karanka in defense and ended with elimination in the Copa del Rey Round of 16, was significant for securing their top-flight status just before the arrival of new permanent manager Luis Fernández.. The 1996-97 campaign marked a vital resurgence for Athletic Bilbao, with Los Leones surging to a strong 6th-place finish in La Liga under the new guidance of manager Luis Fernández. This impressive finish secured a coveted return to European football, qualifying for the UEFA Cup in the following season. Leading the charge was the prolific centre-forward Cuco Ziganda, whose 17 league goals proved decisive in a campaign built on renewed stability and attacking prowess alongside the formidable Julen Guerrero and Ismael Urzaiz. This success, their best league finish in three seasons, signaled a significant and triumphant step forward for the club and remains a proud chapter for the San Mamés faithful.
