Notes

The 1996-97 campaign delivered a dramatic and heartbreaking season for Liverpool as The Reds, under Roy Evans, led the Premier League for much of the year but ultimately fell to a disappointing 4th-place finish on goal difference, missing out on the Champions League. Leading the charge was the prolific forward Robbie Fowler, whose 18 league goals (31 overall) anchored an exciting, attacking side, a campaign also marked by the debut of a young Michael Owen. It was a turbulent year, featuring the "Spice Boys" culture and a deep run to the Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals, and remains a defining chapter remembered as the title that got away.. The 1997-98 campaign was a season of promise and ultimate frustration for Liverpool as The Reds finished a distant 3rd in the Premier League under Roy Evans. The season was truly defined by the sensational emergence of 18-year-old striker Michael Owen, who, stepping in for the injured Robbie Fowler, scored 18 league goals to share the Premier League Golden Boot. Despite an early season title challenge that dramatically faded due to a crippling mid-season slump and disappointing cup exits, Owen's stunning pace and composed finishing proved the decisive bright spot, cementing his status as a national star and marking the beginning of an electrifying new era for the club.
