The 1996-97 season was a historic milestone for the Phoenix Coyotes as it marked the franchise's inaugural year in Arizona following its relocation from Winnipeg. Led by head coach Don Hay and captain Keith Tkachuk, the team enjoyed a successful debut, finishing third in the Central Division with a 38-37-7 record and qualifying for the playoffs. Tkachuk delivered a legendary individual performance by leading the NHL with 52 goals, while superstar Jeremy Roenick and goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, affectionately known as the Bulin Wall, helped establish the team as a competitive force in its new home. Though their season ended in a hard-fought seven-game series against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, the year successfully introduced the NHL to the desert and laid a strong foundation for the franchise's future.
