The 1997-98 campaign delivered domestic glory for Barcelona as the Blaugrana, led by new coach Louis van Gaal, clinched a spectacular La Liga and Copa del Rey Double. Leading the charge was the sensational new signing Rivaldo, whose 19 league goals (and 28 overall) proved decisive in a campaign built on attacking flair and domestic dominance. The double was dramatically secured with a Copa del Rey final victory over Mallorca on penalties, and the team also lifted the UEFA Super Cup. It was a triumphant year that marked the beginning of the Louis van Gaal era and cemented the club's position as the kings of Spain.
