Notes
The 1997-99 period cemented Lothar Matthaus's legacy as the evergreen heartbeat of Bayern Munich, highlighted by his remarkable transition into a world-class sweeper. This era saw the veteran leader inspire the club to the 1998-99 Bundesliga title and a memorable run to the 1999 Champions League final, where his tactical mastery and defensive composure were on full display. Even at 38, Matthaus's enduring quality was recognized as he was named German Footballer of the Year in 1999, providing fans with a final masterclass of leadership and vision before his departure from the European stage.
