Away shirt as worn when the side had a dramatic drop off in form from the previous campaign. Terry Fenwick’s side swapped battling for a Play-Off spot with a relegation fight in 1997-98 as Pompey could only achieve a 20th place finish in the First Division. The side saw an influx of Australian talent arrive at the club with Hamilton Thorp, Craig Foster, Robert Enes and Paul Harries all making the switch from the National Soccer League to the First Division. This shirt was also used in the 1998-99 season when financial issues threatened the clubs survival. Chairman Martin Gregory quit his post under abuse from the clubs fans and in February 1999 the club went into receivership. The side managed to avoid relegation for a 2nd season in a row and the club itself was then saved by new Chairman Milan Mandarić
