Villa started the season of poorly, winning just 2 of their first 13 games in the League and were in the relegation zone until mid-December. Thanks to an upturn in form Villa just missed out on a UEFA Cup spot on goal difference to Newcastle. Villa enjoyed a great cup run in the League Cup, knocking out Wycombe, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Chelsea before disappointingly losing out to Bolton 5-2
