The 2003-04 campaign delivered a historic breakthrough for FSV Mainz 05 as the Karnevalsverein, under the passionate leadership of Jürgen Klopp, clinched a crucial 3rd-place finish in the 2. Bundesliga and secured their first-ever promotion to the top flight. Leading the charge was prolific forward Michael Thurk, whose 13 goals were vital in a season built on fierce determination. This triumph was a monumental reward for their perseverance, coming after two consecutive, agonizing near-misses on the final day, and it remains the defining chapter that launched the 'Zerofivers' as a beloved, top-tier German club.
