Notes
Away shirt as worn in a season of change at St. James' Park. Club hero Bobby Robson saw his five year tenure brought to an abrupt end as he was sacked in late August and eventually replaced with Graeme Souness. The Scotsman was unable to mount a Champions League challenge and the Magpies slipped to 14th place. They did however enjoy a run to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup where Sporting Lisbon over turned a 1-0 deficit to progress 4-2 on aggregate
