The 2005-06 campaign delivered a dramatic and turbulent season for Schalke as Die Knappen finished a strong 4th in the Bundesliga, securing a coveted spot in the UEFA Cup. Despite a mid-season managerial change from Ralf Rangnick to Mirko Slomka, the club compensated for an early Champions League exit with a memorable run to the UEFA Cup semi-finals, only narrowly losing to eventual champions Sevilla in extra time. Leading the scoring charge were Kevin Kurányi and Søren Larsen, each netting 10 goals in the league, defining a campaign built on resilience and a thrilling European adventure that remains a key chapter in the club's modern history.
