In the 2005 Major League Soccer season, the Colorado Rapids finished the regular season with a 13-13-6 record, earning 45 points and placing 7th overall in the league standings. They scored 40 goals and conceded 37 during the campaign. In the playoffs, the Rapids advanced through the Western Conference Semifinals but were eliminated in the Conference Finals after suffering a 2-0 shutout loss to the eventual MLS Cup champions, the Los Angeles Galaxy. Additionally, the team won the inaugural fan-created Rocky Mountain Cup rivalry against expansion team Real Salt Lake.
