In the 2005 MLS season, the LA Galaxy endured a difficult and inconsistent regular season under head coach Steve Sampson, finishing 4th in the Western Conference with a 13-13-6 record. Despite struggling on the road, the team peaked at the right time. Led by newly acquired forward Landon Donovan, who scored 12 goals, the Galaxy made a historic postseason run. They went on to win both the U.S. Open Cup and the MLS Cup, defeating the New England Revolution 1-0 in extra time for their second league title.
