The 2006-07 campaign was a season of dramatic turbulence for Bayern Munich as Der FCB ultimately finished a disappointing 4th in the Bundesliga, which secured their qualification for the UEFA Cup but cost them a Champions League spot. The season was defined by the mid-season sacking of coach Felix Magath, who was replaced by the returning club legend Ottmar Hitzfeld. Despite domestic struggles and a Third Round DFB-Pokal exit, the team delivered an unforgettable Champions League run to the Quarter-Finals, highlighted by a famous Round of 16 victory over Real Madrid where the clinical striker Roy Makaay scored the fastest goal in Champions League history (10.12 seconds). Makaay led the side with 16 league goals in a year that remains a turbulent but memorable chapter of the club's history.
