The 2006-07 campaign was a turbulent season of dashed promotion hopes for FC Köln as Die Geißböcke finished 9th in the 2. Bundesliga after their top-flight relegation. Their star young striker, Patrick Helmes, was brilliant, netting 14 goals, but a crucial broken-foot injury early on sidelined him for four months, which dramatically derailed the team's strong start. The mid-season arrival of legendary coach Christoph Daum, however, stabilized the club and laid the vital foundation for a successful push for promotion back to the Bundesliga the following season.
