The 2006-07 campaign was a tough season of consolidation for Sporting Gijón as the Rojiblancos finished 13th in the Segunda División, their worst league position since the 1961-62 season. Leading the charge was the powerful Colombian forward Edwin Congo, whose 11 goals provided much-needed attacking spark. Under the initial management of Manuel Preciado, the campaign, played out in front of a passionate average crowd of 10,904 at El Molinón, ultimately became a crucial foundational year that preceded their dramatic promotion to La Liga the following season.
