The 2007-08 campaign delivered ultimate heartbreak for Colchester United as The U's finished a chaotic 24th in the Championship, resulting in a devastating relegation to the third tier. Despite the turmoil caused by the departure of key stars and a defense that conceded a staggering 86 goals, the season was brightened by the sensational form of forward Kevin Lisbie, whose 17 league goals proved to be a magnificent personal return. The year held one final, defiant moment of pride as The U's secured a historic 2-0 victory over rivals Ipswich Town at their beloved, aging Layer Road ground, marking the venue's final league win before the club's impending stadium move. It remains an unforgettable, turbulent chapter that closed out an era at Layer Road.
