The 2007-08 campaign was a season of dramatic, last-gasp survival for Kaiserslautern as Die roten Teufel battled against the threat of relegation to the new 3. Liga, ultimately securing a precarious 13th-place finish. The season was defined by early turmoil and a managerial change in February, with Milan Šašić arriving to orchestrate a crucial late-season escape. Safety was dramatically clinched on the final day with a 3-0 victory over already promoted 1. FC Köln. Leading the scoring charts was Canadian winger Josh Simpson, whose 6 goals proved vital in a campaign built on sheer grit and the desperate fight to avoid the club's worst-ever finish in the German league pyramid.
