In their 2007 inaugural MLS season, Toronto FC finished last in the Eastern Conference and 13th overall with a 6-17-7 record, missing the playoffs. Coached by Mo Johnston, the expansion team struggled offensively, scoring a league-worst 25 goals and suffering a record 824-minute scoreless streak. Despite the on-field struggles, the season was a massive off-field success. Playing at the newly opened BMO Field, the club sold out every home game, averaging 20,130 fans and creating a vibrant, European-style atmosphere. Danny Dichio scored the franchise's historic first goal on May 12 in a 3-1 win over Chicago, triggering a memorable celebration where fans showered the pitch with promotional seat cushions.
