Led by the newly formed Big Three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen, the Celtics finished with the league's best record and the top-ranked defense. The season culminated in the franchise's 17th NBA championship after a thrilling 4-2 victory over the rival Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals, with Paul Pierce earning Finals MVP honors and Kevin Garnett being named Defensive Player of the Year. A 2020 Hall of Fame inductee and the 2008 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Kevin Garnett was a legendary power forward who led the Boston Celtics to an NBA championship in 2008 and earned five All-Star selections during his six seasons with the franchise.
