In the 2008 Major League Soccer season, the Columbus Crew enjoyed a historic campaign, capturing a league double under head coach Sigi Schmid. The team dominated the regular season, finishing first in the Eastern Conference and overall standings with a 17-7-6 record (57 points) to secure the Supporters' Shield. In the postseason, they advanced to their first-ever MLS Cup final, where they defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 to win their maiden league title. Playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto led the league with 19 assists and was named both regular season and MLS Cup MVP.
