Notes

The 2008-09 campaign delivered ultimate heartbreak for Newcastle United, ending their 16-season stay in the top flight with a devastating 18th-place finish and relegation to the Championship. This catastrophic year was defined by off-field chaos, including Kevin Keegan's resignation, the controversial appointment of Joe Kinnear, and a final, desperate eight-game spell under club legend Alan Shearer. Despite the turmoil, the attack was joint-led by the pacey Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins and club captain Michael Owen, who each netted 8 crucial league goals, but their contributions were not enough to halt the dramatic slide that culminated in a final-day defeat at Aston Villa. It was a turbulent and unforgettable year that marked a dark chapter in the club's modern history.
