Despite Hoffenheim's status as a village of just over 3000 people, the side had managed to fight their way from regional football all the way to the Bundesliga by 2008, albeit with lots of financial backing from owner Dietmar Hopp who was one of the richest people in Germany at the time. Under the tutelage of experienced operator Ralf Rangnick, the side would miraculously be top of the Bundesliga at Christmas, crowned the Hinrunde "first half" Champions. The side would fall away in the second half of the season as Wolfsburg's famous side would top the league with Hoffenheim eventually finishing 7th.
