Notes

The 2008-09 campaign was a season of agonizing near-misses for Hamburger SV as The Rothosen finished a strong 5th in the Bundesliga, narrowly missing out on a Champions League spot. Under manager Martin Jol, the team made a brilliant run to the semi-finals of both the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Cup, only to be dramatically eliminated in both by bitter rivals Werder Bremen. Leading the charge was the prolific forward Mladen Petrić, whose 12 league goals provided crucial firepower in a season defined by those brutal, heartbreaking Nordderby encounters.. The 2009-10 campaign for Hamburger SV was a season of soaring European ambition that ended in heartbreak, as The Rothosen finished a disappointing 7th in the Bundesliga, missing out on European qualification for the first time in seven years. Leading the attack was Mladen Petrić, whose 20 goals across all competitions, including 8 in the league, drove the team to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. This European adventure was the defining feature, though it ended agonizingly with elimination by Fulham, robbing the club of a chance to play the final in their own HSH Nordbank Arena. The year, which also saw Petrić score a key winner in their last victory against rivals Bayern Munich for eight years, was marked by late-season turmoil that led to the sacking of manager Bruno Labbadia in April. It was a frustrating end to a promising run, defining a chapter where a great opportunity slipped away.
