Notes

The 2009-10 campaign was a turbulent season of transition for AZ Alkmaar, the reigning Eredivisie champions, as they ultimately finished 5th. The year began with the challenge of replacing title-winning manager Louis van Gaal and was defined by significant managerial upheaval, seeing Ronald Koeman depart mid-season before club legend Dick Advocaat took over. Despite the struggles in the league and a winless debut UEFA Champions League group stage campaign, the Cheeseheads secured early silverware by triumphing in the Johan Cruyff Shield against Heerenveen. Leading the line throughout the challenging year was the talismanic Mounir El Hamdaoui, whose 18 crucial league goals were a defining feature of a season built on navigating a difficult post-championship adjustment.
