Home shirt as worn in the successful qualification campaign for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Three Lions wore the home shirt twice in the competition, including the opening game of the tournament, in a 1-1 stalemate draw with USA. Captain Steven Gerrard scored England's first goal of the campaign in the 4th minute, but Clint Dempsey equalised for the opponents just before the half. England advanced to the knockout stages of the tournament, finishing second only on goal difference following a 0-0 draw with Algeria and 1-0 victory over Slovenia thanks to Jermain Defoe's strike. The round of 16 tie with Germany will infamously be remembered for controversy, with England disallowed a clear goal from Frank Lampard, a goal that would have made the match 2-2 in the first half. Instead, Germany came away as 4-1 winners, knocking the Three Lions out of the World Cup
