The 2009-10 campaign saw Leicester City, recently promoted from League One, deliver a surprise push for the Premier League, finishing a superb 5th place in the Championship under manager Nigel Pearson. The Foxes secured a coveted play-off spot, spearheading their attack with the exciting form of young loan striker Martyn Waghorn, whose 12 league goals topped the side's chart (with Matty Fryatt the overall top scorer). The season, which was the club's 125th anniversary, culminated in a dramatic play-off semi-final against Cardiff City, where the club ultimately suffered a heart-breaking defeat on penalties after a sudden-death save from David Marshall denied Waghorn. It was a memorable and ambitious year that re-established The Foxes as a major force in the second tier.
