In the 2010 MLS season, the Columbus Crew enjoyed a memorable yet heartbreaking campaign under head coach Robert Warzycha. Although they captured the Eastern Conference crown for a second straight year, they suffered late-season struggles, finishing fifth overall with 50 points. The postseason brought disappointment as they were eliminated in the conference semifinals by the Colorado Rapids on penalty kicks. The Crew also narrowly missed out on silverware elsewhere, falling to Seattle in the U.S. Open Cup final.
