The FC Zürich 2011–12 season was a turbulent period marked by domestic inconsistency and European experimentation. Coming off a runner-up finish the previous year, the club struggled to maintain momentum and finished 6th in the Swiss Super League with a record of 11 wins, 8 draws, and 15 defeats. Despite their domestic slump, the team enjoyed a prominent Continental run; after being eliminated by Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League play-offs, they transitioned into the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they finished fourth in Group D alongside Sporting CP, Lazio, and Vaslui. The season was also marred by the infamous "Disgrace of Zürich" in October 2011, when a heated Zürich derby against local rivals Grasshopper Club Zürich had to be abandoned due to fan rioting.
