In the 2012 MLS season, D.C. United experienced a major resurgence under head coach Ben Olsen, finishing 2nd in the Eastern Conference with a 17-10-7 record and amassing 58 points. Led by top scorer Chris Pontius, the club qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2007.
