In 2014, D.C. United completed a historic turnaround, engineered by head coach Ben Olsen. Following a dismal 2013 campaign, a massive roster overhaul led to a 43-point swing—the largest in MLS history. United finished 1st in the Eastern Conference with a 17-8-9 record, driven by key contributions from Fabián Espíndola, Luis Silva, and goalkeeper Bill Hamid. However, their playoff run ended in the conference semifinals against the New York Red Bulls. Outside of MLS play, they advanced undefeated through the CONCACAF Champions League group stage.
