This Puma design was released to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Rot-Weiss Essen's 1954-55 title-winning season. Prior to the establishment of the Bundesliga in 1963, the winners and runners-up of the regional Oberliga Nord, Süd, West, Sudwest and Berlin competed in a round of play-offs to decide which team would be German champions. Essen beat Kaiserslautern 4-3 in the final to earn the club's only championship in their history, which qualified them for the inaugural European Cup, held the following season.
