The 2016–17 season was a difficult and transitional campaign for Grasshopper Club Zurich, marked by domestic inconsistency and managerial turnover. Managed by Pierluigi Tami until his dismissal in March 2017, the team struggled for form and spent much of the year lingering near the bottom of the table. They ultimately finished in 8th place in the Swiss Super League with 38 points, avoiding the relegation zone by a slim 8-point margin. In continental football, they reached the UEFA Europa League playoff round but failed to make the group stage, while their domestic cup run ended in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Cup.
