In the 2016 Major League Soccer season, Columbus Crew SC endured a highly disappointing campaign, finishing 9th in the Eastern Conference and 18th overall with an 8-12-14 record. Coming off an MLS Cup Final appearance the previous year, head coach Gregg Berhalter's side missed the playoffs entirely, marking one of the worst seasons in franchise history. The year was plagued by injuries to key players like Federico Higuain and a high-profile controversy that led to the trade of star striker Kei Kamara. A bright spot was forward Ola Kamara, who stepped up to lead the team with 16 goals, though the club struggled defensively and suffered a league-worst 10-game winless streak mid-season.
