In the 2017 Major League Soccer season, FC Dallas entered as defending Supporters' Shield and U.S. Open Cup champions but endured a disappointing campaign. They finished 7th in the Western Conference and 13th overall with an 11-13-10 record, narrowly missing out on the MLS Cup Playoffs to the San Jose Earthquakes via a wins tiebreaker. Maxi Urruti led the team in scoring with 12 league goals. Internationally, they reached the semifinals of the 2016–17 CONCACAF Champions League.
