During the 2017–18 football season, the South Africa national team (Bafana Bafana) endured a disappointing campaign marked by their failure to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Competing in CAF Group D of the qualifiers, South Africa suffered crucial defeats against Cape Verde and Senegal, including a 2–0 home loss and a 2–1 away defeat to group winners Senegal (after a controversial replayed match ordered by FIFA), finishing at the bottom of their group with just 4 points on the table (excluding a voided win)
