In the 2018 MLS season, the Portland Timbers finished 5th in the Western Conference with a 15-9-10 record under new head coach Giovanni Savarese. After a slow start with five road games due to stadium renovations, they went on a 15-match unbeaten streak. In the playoffs, they defeated FC Dallas, the Seattle Sounders in a dramatic penalty shootout, and Sporting Kansas City to win the Western Conference. They advanced to the MLS Cup Final, where they fell 2-0 to Atlanta United.
