In the 2021 Major League Soccer season, LAFC endured a challenging campaign characterized by injuries and significant transition, ultimately missing the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time in franchise history after falling just four points short on Decision Day. Captain Carlos Vela was limited by injury, but the mid-season arrival of Colombian striker Cristian "Chicho" Arango provided a massive spark, as he scored 14 goals in 17 games to win MLS Newcomer of the Year.
