In the 2022 Major League Soccer season, New York City FC entered as the defending MLS Cup champions and finished 3rd in the Eastern Conference with a 16-7-11 record, accumulating 55 points. They reached the Eastern Conference Final in the MLS Cup Playoffs but were eliminated by the Philadelphia Union. Internationally, NYCFC advanced to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, where they fell to the Seattle Sounders, but found success by defeating Atlas FC to win the Campeones Cup.
