A Look at the Football Tracksuit

Tracksuits. All footballers wear them at some point in their career. To be honest, they probably wear them every day of their footballing lives, and even beyond the game. They’re a pretty essential part of football lifestyle and they have been for a long, long time.

Wandering back in time, tracksuits are iconic. When thinking about football kits, we admire the shirts themselves and see the tracksuits as an extension of these. It’s the kit’s Pokémon evolution. Normally, it’s a full set. Bottoms and tops. Tracksuits in general are a wonderful thing. We have seen players across the years wear them constantly. Some have been good; some have been pretty bad. But one thing we can cherish about tracksuits is that they have provided some very cool fits over time.

Seeing the likes of Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta and Francesco Totti all wearing Italian tracksuits back in the 90s and Sir Bobby Robson pulling off a Kappa tracksuit when at Barcelona gives us all a fuzzy feeling. However, Tony Pulis ruins all the fun for us by wearing one (badly) and pairing it with ZX Flux. That ain’t it, Tony, mate.

Over the years, we’ve seen brands do it well. Nike have had some classics for clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal. Kappa are tracksuit icons with some beautiful Juventus, Barcelona and Napoli editions. Adidas have also been at the forefront of cool tracksuits with Newcastle, Liverpool and Bayern Munich (just check Kevin Keegan at Newcastle during the 90s). Umbro have had some delights with Brazil, England, Ajax and more. There have been some pretty sweet full tracksuits.

The tracksuit has grown in popularity due to the increase in engagement with football culture and lifestyle. We’ve seen the game’s culture grow considerably over recent years with various other sub-cultures becoming intertwined with it. One of these is fashion. The crossover between fashion and football has been a fascinating thing to witness. Seeing football related clothes become a focal point of fashion releases, modelling and creative is great. With this increase in interest from the fashion world, the level of ‘coolness’ of football tracksuits has rocketed. If you’re an edgy fashion student looking for a focus for your projects, then check out football and you’ll find some gems. Just ask Kendall Jenner.

It’s not even just retro tracksuits that provide some pretty decent looks. With a surge in the popularity of grime, the tracksuit has become more and more prominent in society with many more people being seen wearing a full one round town. One person who has pioneered the tracksuit has been Wiley. The Godfather of Grime will have been wearing Nike tracksuits for time but what does this have to do with football culture and lifestyle? Well, on stage he was seen wearing a modern Barcelona tracksuit. He even attended the NME Awards 2017 wearing a full Nike Atletico Madrid tracksuit. Incredible.

Despite not being the star of the show when discussing football gear, the tracksuit has played a pretty fundamental part in football clothing becoming increasingly popular across various sub-cultures. If you want to look cooler than you already are in your retro Fiorentina shirt, get the full tracksuit to match as well. Partner with a nice pair of trainers and if you’re feeling extra edgy, one of those bags people wear across their body. Or rock it however you like. Express yourself.
