In the semifinals, the USA beat Spain 2–0 who, at the time, were at the top the FIFA World Rankings and on a run of 35 games undefeated. With that win, they advanced to their first-ever final in a men's FIFA tournament, where they would ultimately come unstuck against Brazil - losing 3–2 after leading 2–0 at half time.
