I have supported Falkirk since I was a kid, my friend’s dad took us to games when I was about six, this was back when we played at Brockville Park. Those were great days and the atmosphere at Brockville was something you don’t see at modern all-seater stadiums. With me being a big Falkirk fan and a fan of classic shirts it only seemed natural to collect them!
I now have 60 matchworn Falkirk shirts and I’m just three shirts away from reaching my goal of owning at least one matchworn shirt of each design we’ve had since 1991. This includes three that were worn in Scottish Cup Finals, one from the 1997 final, one from 2009 and one from 2015, these all have special Cup Final embroidery.
My first matchworn shirt was a remembrance day shirt with a poppy embroidered on worn by defender Brian McLean, this was from our 3-3 draw with Celtic. I bought it directly from the club and was overjoyed that I owned something so unique, this led to me buying a number of one off shirts (poppies, cup finals and semi finals) and ultimately led me to trying to achieve my matchworn challenge!
The 2009 Scottish Cup Final shirt was gifted to me by the club and is the shirt I am proudest to own. In 2005 a Falkirk youth player, Craig Gowans was tragically died in an accident at the club’s training ground. Following the semi-final a number of youth products who played with Craig and were still at the club made references to him, I suggested to the club that they should honour him and wear a shirt with his name on for the final and they did! I was gifted Gerard Aafjes shirt from the game.
I have a few that are pretty rare, my oldest is a 1978 shirt made by Bukta, a real classic shirt manufacturer.
I also own two shirts by Falkirk legend Russell Latapy, he played at the 2006 World Cup whilst with the club with Trinidad and Tobago and is still remembered by the Falkirk faithful fondly.
This is a tough one as I do only need three shirts to complete my matchworn challenge!
If I had to pick a shirt that wasn’t included in that it would have to be a 1957 Scottish Cup winning shirt, if only I could afford one!
One of the shirts I own was worn by Dennon Lewis, he was far from a success at Falkirk but has since made a name for himself having featured on the most recent season of Love Island!
