Seán moved to Motherwell from Co. Westmeath, Ireland last year, not knowing too much about the area he decided to check out a Motherwell game, fast forward to now and his shirt collection is a sight to behold!

I recently moved to Motherwell knowing nothing about the area other than the football team! I first came across the famous Claret & Amber of Motherwell playing FIFA ’96 as a kid (the one with Jason McAteer on the cover!) I’m mindful that I’m part of a generation moving out to Motherwell who mainly work and socialise in either Edinburgh or Glasgow and wanted to do something to feel part of the local community here. I made my way along to a couple of games at the tail end of last season and was totally taken aback by the warmth and kindness shown to me by everyone involved in the club. Right the way from the fans in the stands, to the teams who work tirelessly behind the scenes, I was made to feel very welcome at the club. Add to that the fan ownership model offered by The Well Society, and I was sold!

I’m currently sitting in the region of around 50 or so pieces and this is growing by the day. I’ve set up my Instagram account - @steelmansean to document my journey. I’ve had people reach out to me on there to donate pieces which is amazing. Likewise, I’m trying to help as many fans as possible with tracking down stuff, especially if I have spare sizes or any extra kits. It’s been a great way to meet local fans and learn more about the club’s history!

What was your first shirt and when did you buy it?

I bought the Macron 2018-19 home jersey from the official team shop at Fir Park late last season. This ignited my interest in the history of Motherwell kits and set me on my mission. As someone who has a longstanding interest in collecting sportswear (especially NBA, NHL and MLB stuff from the 90s), I got super excited when I happened upon some of the absolute Motherwell belters in existence from the early to mid 90s. As with any team, there are a couple of early 00s kits in the mix that are a bit iffy, but overall Motherwell have had some amazing kits over the years.

What is your favourite shirt and why is it so special?

I think my favourite would have to be the Pony 1996 player-worn away jersey I tracked down that belonged to Tommy Coyne has to be my favourite, as a kid growing up in rural Ireland watching the Republic of Ireland at USA ’94, it’s brilliant to have a kit that belonged to the great man himself!

What is the rarest shirt in your collection?

The 1991 kit by Admiral which is synonymous with the Scottish Cup win that year. That was particularly tricky to track down in my size and is the shirt I get the most requests for easily.

The Hummel away kit we had from 1992 is proving to be particularly elusive at the moment! In fact, I believe Classic Football Shirts even put it up for a Hall Of Shame Or Fame vote earlier this year on Twitter. They definitely don’t make them like that anymore!

Do you have any more interesting stories about your collection?

The commercial team at Motherwell who look after all their social channels are absolutely brilliant. They really are a model for any football team looking to do fan engagement properly and not just focus solely on the club itself. They recently did a video piece on my collection which you can check out over on their YouTube. Lastly, I wouldn’t be anywhere near the number of shirts I have if it wasn’t for the kindness and generosity of local fans. Next time someone tries to claim Scottish football is only about Rangers or Celtic, let them know about the Pride of Lanarkshire!
