Last week it was reported that the Premier League could be facing a ban on betting companies sponsoring football shirts with the government announcing that they were set to review the 2005 Gambling Act. This would mean that 9 out of 20 Premier League teams would need to re-think and find new sponsors for next season. The move would also follow similar bans that have been put in place in Spain and Italy. Last October, the Spanish government argued that due to the awful implications betting has on the most vulnerable parts of society, betting shirt sponsors would be banned. There have also been suggestions that the EFL would actually be affected before the Premier League, where 50% of EFL clubs have betting sponsors which tend to earn clubs over £40million a year.
In March 2021 a spokesperson for Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) said "We are determined to tackle problem gambling in all its forms and the work will build upon our strong track record of introducing measures to protect those at risk." An interesting but also alarming prospect for many English clubs.
